One of our dream romantic reunions!

One of our dream romantic reunions!

NBC: Unveiled its fall programming yesterday, with several new dramas and two comedies.  The network decided to delay an announcement about “on-the-bubble” shows like Chuck and My Name is Earl.

MTV: Movie award nominations, chosen by the fans, are out and Twilight leads the pack.  Considering fans also choose the winners, we’re gonna go out on a limb and say Twilight will bring home the most bronzed popcorn.

Jessica Simpson: Admitted in a new Vanity Fair interview that she hasn’t spoken to ex-hubby Nick Lachey “in years.”  And here we are, still waiting for them to get back together!  (The other couples we haven’t given up hope for: Brad & Jen and Britney & Justin.  Yes, we know we’re deluded.  Leave us be.)

Coldplay: Facing–and ignoring–accusations that they plagiarized melody for their hit “Viva la vida.”  Is there really any way to prove this?  So much harder with music than the written word.

David Hasselhoff: Fighting back rumors that he suffered a severe case of alcohol poisoning over the weekend. The former Baywatch actor has admitted to substance abuse problems in the past, but his lawyers maintain all is well now.

Eminem: Relying on rap to get him “high” now that he’s fought his pill addiction.  We’re rooting for him, especially for the sake of his daughter.

Disney: Would you be more likely to buy an avocado if it was a High School Musical avocado?  That’s the logic Disney is working on but we can’t see parents going that far.

The Onion: Satirical publications are just as screwed as the rest of them.  The Onion, which seems to be loved by everyone but us, will no longer have a Los Angeles edition.  Don’t really understand how they’re cutting out such a huge market, but what do we know?  We’re still unemployed!

SIZZLED OUT: Family Guy

STILL SIZZLING: This rapper admits to watching an episode of Gossip Girl or two–only to learn about his film co-star, Chace Crawford.

Real-life lovebirds!

Real-life lovebirds!

Obama: Not even the president can stand in the way of American Idol.  Though Obama said he wants primetime coverage this week for a press conference, Fox is refusing to give it to him.  The reason?  The conference could cut in to time scheduled for the Idol results show.

Fox: Here’s something the network IS willing to do: hold a contest to find the next best script writer.  If that means less reality shows, then that’s fine with us.

Slumdog Millionaire: Know how to make a great movie even better?  Have the two leads fall in love!  Slumdog’s Dev Patel and Freida Pinto are in a relationship, Patel’s mother confirmed.  Too cute!

Wolverine: News flash–superheros (or rather, the actors that play them) are not infallible.  The planned Mexico City premiere for Wolverine has been canceled due to the spread of the deadly swine flu.

Saved by the Bell: Gotta give Jimmy Fallon credit for trying to stage an SBTB reunion on his show.  Love this segment, which so closely paraodies one of the episodes, it’s kind of scary…in a good way!

YouTube: Does the phrase “shoes, betch!” mean anything to you?  If it does, you have to check out the latest video by “Kelly,” the character responsible for Shoes and Text Message Break-Up.

Gawker: It looks pretty but it’s really quite sad.  Gawker put together an image of all the recently-folded magazines.

SIZZLED OUT: Eminem

STILL SIZZLING: This singer and her ex say they’re modeling their second go-round on long-term couples like Tim Robbins & Susan Sarandon and Goldie Hawn & Kurt Russel.

Just needed to add some females to this post!

Just needed to add some females to this post!

Zac Efron: Absolutely loved the HSM skit he did on SNL this weekend.  Except for the anti-Semitic Walt Disney.  That part wasn’t necessary.

Eminem: Will be performing at the MTV Movie Awards, according to MTV’s Twitter acount.

Fast & Furious: After the record-breaking success (really!) of the franchise’s fourth installment, they’re now planning a fifth one!  Don’t think anyone expected this!

Obama: Love that the identity of his dog can’t even stay secret!  The news was leaked by an anonymous site before The Washington Post, given rights to the story, could report it.

RENT: We had the opportunity to see our favorite musical this weekend for the sixth time!  What made this performance so special?  It starred Anthony Rapp and Adam Pascal back in the roles they originated more than 10 years ago.  And they were as amazing as ever!

Scott Peterson: Always was and always will be fascinated by the Laci/Scott Peterson case.  Really glad to PEOPLE did an update on the story.

SIZZLED OUT: Beyonce and Jay-Z

STILL SIZZLING: This singer praised her Rihanna for being a “cool chick.”  Did she kiss her, too?

Meet Dorothy Gale

Meet Dorothy Gale

Sizzle: We’re back.  We know you missed us.  You can calm down now.

Lindsay Lohan: Her relationship with Samantha Ronson has never been anything less than bizarre.  Even though the restraining order reports are false, we wouldn’t be surprised in the least if either girl sought one.

Eminem: No better way to launch a comeback than to release a song and video taking potshots at practically everyone in the tabloids.  That’s Eminem for ya.

The Simpsons: MySpace is running a contest inviting fans to film their own couch gag.  Could see record participation for this one, we think.

Beverly Hills 90210: More than 10 years after it originally aired, season seven was released on DVD yesterday.  Who wants to bet that after all 10 seasons are done, they’ll make a complete series boxset and entice us to shell out even more money?

Oprah: Now that she’s done campaigning for Obama, O has turned her sights to the 2016 Olympics which, if she has her way, will be in our hometown of Chicago.  Honestly not sure if we want the Olympics here, so we can’t say whether the Oprah effect will be good or bad.

The Wizard of Oz: Getting a modern-day treatment for a new televisions series to be called Dorothy Gale.  Can’t see it having the same charm as the original, though.  To be fair, other Oz spin-offs (The Wiz, Wicked, etc.) have done quite well so this one might see some success, too.

SIZZLED OUT: Survivor

STILL SIZZLING: This one-time iconic sitcom dad–who is best known in real life for his foul comedy–returned to TV this week in another father role.

One of the best songs ever. Try to convince us otherwise!

One of the best songs ever. Try to convince us otherwise!

90210: If we dislike the new show show so much, how come we get chills every time we see a promo for its January return?

The CW: Notoriously shut out from awards, just like its predecessor The WB.  So Kristin over at E! Online is holding her own CW-only awards.  Pretty cute.

TV Guide: We don’t get this AT ALL.  TV Guide the magazine and TVGuide.com the web site are now owned by different companies.  So one of our favorite writers, Matt Roush, will no longer be on the site.  WTF?

Eminem: Denying reports that his new album will include a follow-up to one of our favorite songs, Stan.

Tara Reid: Checked into rehab but no word on what she’s there for.

Tommy Hilfiger: Reportedly got married last night.  Most interesting to us: he gave his fiance an 8.2 carat engagement ring!  So how sparkly is the wedding band?!

American Idol: If they cancel their hugeeeeeee charity event, Idol Gives Back, will they lose credibility?  Or will people understand given the economy?

Economy: Who has a clever name for the current recession/depression/doomsday?  The New York Times are looking for it!

Gawker: Can now comment on their blog through your Facebook accounts.  Kudos actually goes to FB, we think.

Rod Blagojevich: Deleted his Facebook account after his arrest–but not before getting slammed with insults from other users.

Rod Balgojevich Pt. 2: The Chicago Tribune has a pretty funny animation based on the governor’s profanity-laded conversations.

John Ritter: Got a really good tribute on last night’s Family Entertainment Awards, 5 years after his death.

SIZZLED OUT: Jonathan Safran Foer (schadenfoer!)

STILL SIZZLING: This musician says he wants to follow in Justin Timberlake’s footsteps.  With his own hit song last summer and writing a hit for another new star, we don’t think he’ll have any problem finding more success.

There goes our future...

There goes our future...

Mash-Ups: We are loving the mash-ups of rap songs and children’s programs.  Some combinations: Spongebob and Eminem, Family Guy and Akon, Barney and Soulja Boy, etc. Pretty hysterical.

Kanye West: Forget music.  Kanye is switching gears (or industries) and looking for an internship in the fashion world.  Something tells us he won’t like getting coffee for the higher-ups, but we’ll let him figure that out all on his own.

Viacom: Laid off a whopping 850 people today at MTV, Nickelodeon, VH1, Comedy Central and other subsidiaries.  Not a good day.

MTV: Holy crap!  Long-time correspondent John Norris is supposedly one of the fired employees!  What is the world coming to?!

NBC: And the ax continues to fall.  500 employees cut.

Eliot Spitzer: Don’t count the former gov down and out.  He’s been hired by Slate to write a column on goverment regulation.  To all wondering, this does not include prostitution.

The Daily Beast: Great piece on why Gwyneth Paltrow’s new site (which goes by the oh-so-attractive name GOOP) is a big mistake.

Bratz: Victory for Barbie collections everywhere!  A judge has ordered production on Bratz dolls to cease immediately (and for stores to send back their stock!) since the (ugly) dolls were conceived by a dude who worked for Mattel at the time.  Ah, sweet revenge!

Sundance: No less than 3 journalism/media films in the mix.  We’re dying to see The September Issue, which follows Anna Wintour and the production of Vogue’s September issue.

Chicago Magazine: Has a really interesting article on Amy Jacobson, the news reporter fired for “misconduct” when she tried to interview Craig Steib, whose wife remains missing.

11/16 BONUS POST

trl1

AFTER 10 YEARS AND A 3-HOUR FINALE, TOTAL REQUEST LIVE IS OFFICIALLY OFF THE AIR.

The last TRL, renamed Total Finale Live for this special event, was a jam-packed celebration of the show that defined our childhood afternoons.

SOME THOUGHTS

Carson Daly returned to emcee the event with current host Damien Fahey.

The show actually started with a performance by Beyonce.

Weird that it was held on a Sunday night, and not a weekday, like the normal TRL.

Appearances from celebs ran the gamut from Miley Cyrus, Taylor Swift, Jonathan Davis, Snoop Dogg and…Samuel L. Jackson?!

First on-air (and live!) interview with Travis Barker post-plane crash.  Very subdued, not that we blame him.

Diddy pretended to (or perhaps really??) choke up when he was honored for making the most appearances on TRL.

Awkward moment: Carson referring to ex Jennifer Love Hewitt.

Co-hosted by all the former VJs, including three of our faves: Hilarie Burton (yay One Tree Hill!), Dave Holmes and Jesse Camp, from the very first I Wanna Be a VJ contest.

Fall Out Boy performed…minus Pete Wentz.  He later called into the show and said he was in California prepping for imminent fatherhood.  Will it really be that soon?!

Soundbyte: “I bought Twilight on bootleg and watched it like 72 times”–Pete Wentz.  Setting a great example, as always.

Did Hilary Duff run into ex Joel Madden?

Kid Rock insisted on smoking a cigar on stage.  And here we thought it was illegal to smoke in New York venues…

Justin Timberlake and JC Chasez represented NSYNC but it would’ve been cool if the whole band returned AND performed.

X-Tina, Chris Brown, Ben Stiller and others spoke via satellite.

Disappointing moment: Eminem, on the phone, refuses to give any details about his upcoming album, Relapse.

Quintessential window references and segments with the Times Square crowd.

KoRn was hailed as the first rock band of TRL; brought back memories of the KoRn (number 3) spot.

A short segment looked back at the top MTV News moments, giving due respect to 9/11.  Wish they also mentioned Aaliyah.

Many shameless plugs: Bolt, Diddy’s new cologne (who was made fun of for hyping the most stuff over the years), Last Call, FNMTV and more.

East Coast and West Coast rap/hip-hop came together in medley featuring Nelly, Snoop and Ludacris.

Unnecessary moment: knocking LFO.

Soundbyte: “One of the finer moments of my life”–JT recalling when Halle Berry surprised him on a TRL ep.

Backstreet Boys given lots of praise, though we wish former member Kevin returned for the performance.

Soundbyte: “They outlived all the other boy bands and they outlived TRL“–Carson on BSB.

Noticeably absent: 98 Degrees, Jessica Simpson, Destiny’s Child, Mandy Moore, Jay-Z, Avril, Sum-41, Linkin Park and others.

Are all the TRL employees without jobs now?  After all, MTV (and parent Viacom) are doing lay-offs…

Soundbyte: Britney is “the queen of TRL“–Carson on Brit Brit who “couldn’t be here.”

Loved that some of our favorite moments were re-aired: the debut party for BSB’s Millenium album, Mariah and her ice cream truck, countless others.

Speaking of counting, the TRL finale wouldn’t be complete without a final countdown. The Top 10 videos from TRL history, as decided by the producers: Hey-Ya (Outkast), What’s My Age Again (Blink-182), Yeah (Ludacris, Usher, et. al.), Crazy in Love (Beyonce), Bawitdaba (Kid Rock), Dirrty (Christina Aguilera), Bye Bye Bye (NSYNC), I Want It That Way (BSB), The Real Slim Shady (Eminem), and, at number one, Baby One More Time (Britney).

Soundbyte: “Goodnight from New York and goodnight TRL“–Carson.

TEAR!

He may have a perpetual scowl but he's using his new book to tell us why.

He may have a perpetual scowl but he's using his new book to tell us why.

Sarah Palin: Will be making her long-awaited appearance on SNL tonight.  Great for ratings.

Eminem: From the memoir we told you about yesterday: “If you go back and look at the abuse that I took, it’s no surprise I became who I am.”  We’re just curious to know who he is today.

TV: How dumb are thee?  Let us count the ways.

Grammy Awards: There will actually be a nomination special on two months before the big event.  Considering how down ratings have been for awards shows lately, we don’t really understand this move.  Who wants low ratings twice?

Lost: The show is ending!  In 2010…

SIZZLED OUT: Jenny McCarthy and Denis Leary

STILL SIZZLING: This show is coming back for a third season, possibly without its creator.  Too bad we don’t watch it.

I'm not Sharpay!

I'm not Sharpay!

Eminem: Finally coming back on the radar.  But not with new music but a memoir instead.  He’s had an interesting public life thus far.  We can’t wait to get more details!

Andy Dick: He gets to wear a new accessory for the next year: an alcohol monitor bracelet!

Prison Break: Rumor has it there are 3 deaths in the upcoming episodes.  While we’re sad to see anyone go, maybe this means the show will finally have a simple plot.

Gossip Girl: Critics are saying it gets better with each episode–and the best is still yet to come.  We totally disagree…and yet we can’t stop watching!

Chris Kilpatrick: Called ex-bandmate Lance Bance the worst dancer in NSYNC but also noted he’s “amazing” on DWTS.  That’s sort of a compliment.  Maybe.  Kinda.

Ashley Tisdale: She’s said she wants to shed her HSM image.  Step one: dying her hair.  Weird to see her with this color when Seventeen has her on the cover of their new issue as a blonde.
